An analysis of the causes of late postnatal death in children with congenital heart disease over 60 years has shown that heart failure is the most common cause of congenital heart disease, and pneumonia is an important non congenital heart disease-related cause of death. (J Am Coll Cardiol. 2016, 68: 487)

The researchers collected data for patients under the age of 15 who underwent cardiac surgery from five university hospitals or one regional hospital in Finland from 1953 to 2009. A total of 10964 patients underwent 14079 operations with a follow-up rate of 98%. The early mortality rate (<30 d) was 5.6%. The late mortality rate was 10.4%.

Analysis found that heart failure is the most common cause of congenital heart disease-related death, the average age of onset is 14 years old, but in 1990-99 patients who underwent surgery to reduce the number of deaths caused by heart failure.

From 1990 to 2009, sudden changes in atrial septal defect, ventricular septal defect, tetralogy of Fallot and aortic transposition were reduced to zero.

In addition, compared with the control population, the patient population died of respiratory disease, infectious diseases, neurological diseases and the proportion of tumors was significantly higher. Follow-up data indicate that pneumonia is an important non congenital heart disease-related cause of death.
